Darshna Soni catches up with one of the world’s greatest R&B producers, Pharrell Williams, who describes getting songs rejected by Jackson’s manager.
Williams, who had just finished performing with his band N.E.R.D. in front of a 200,000 audience at Glastonbury, paid tribute to Michael Jackson. He revealed that some of the songs he made were offered to Michael Jackson first. But Jackson’s manager said the songs were not good enough so they were given to Justin Timberlake instead. “Every time I’d ever seen him, [Michael Jackson] would always bring that up,” he said. “He would laugh so hard that he would fall out on the couch like a kid. It was the most amazing thing you’ve ever seen in your life.” “It’s a sad day for music to lose that talent.”

NO wonder Pharrell couldn’t resist a hug with Rihanna. The singer was on stunning form in balmy Beverly Hills, teaming trendy high heels with denim hotpants. Which must have made a chat with Pharrell all the more pleasurable for the N*E*R*D frontman. Rihanna - whose ex CHRIS BROWN was convicted of assaulting her at the weekend - rattled off an array of teasing facial expressions as she traded words with her pal. N.E.R.D. LOOK TO FIGHT EVIL SPACE GORILLAS

With the launch of N.E.R.D.’s new website comes the opportunity for every fan to live out any life long fantasy of saving the hip-hop trio from an evil space gorilla. N.E.R.D. has launched the official ‘Seeing Sounds’ game, drawing on the 80’s era of video games where the bits are glorified in 2-D, sided scrolling action. Your task is to pick one of the N.E.R.D’s — be it Pharrell, Chad, or Shay — and navigate a space station, in search of the other two. Where are they? They’ve been taken hostage (of course) by said evil space gorilla. The game is quite easy to pick up; you just need the directional arrows on your keyboard and the space bar to jump, but after playing the game several times, we still weren’t able to thwart the gorilla’s plans.
How’s that done? According to the instructions, “as everyone knows, the only way to defeat evil space gorillas is with Brain Power.” That’s right. The only way to get the monkey off N.E.R.D’s back is to collect the glowing red brains that are strategically placed around the station before time runs out. Whether you’re looking to kill some time at work or just tired of all those graphic intensive games, N.E.R.D’s ‘Seeing Sounds’ game is easily the best game involving a hip-hop act and a space gorilla we’ve played this summer.

Pharrell has gone the extra mile to impress with his design interests and by the looks of his new blinged out G-Shock, he know’s what he’s doing. Of course it looks low fidelity, but that appeal has us sold on this little time ticker. Custom crafted in gold with yellow diamonds encrusted on the bezel and an iconic logo on the face in rainbow colors, the new Pharrell G-Shock watch proves disgustingly awesome. A watch that stands out from the crowd at a first glance, there must be a reason why we’ve got our eyes stuck on this thing.

PHARRELL DISPLAYS HIS BRAND AMBITION IN MUSIC

At a Smirnoff press conference at the Bowery Hotel last year, Pharrell Williams admitted that he doesn’t sleep. “I’m just operating in a fog,” he told the crowd. Williams has plenty of reasons to be worn out. Aside from his thriving career as a producer (of the new Usher album, among other projects), he performs with N*E*R*D (which is finishing a new album), runs a clothing line (Billionaire Boys Club) and a shoe line (Ice Cream) and will soon launch a branding agency with Cornerstone (see story, page 22). He even has starlets lining up to work with him: A gossip column reported that Lindsay Lohan was overheard telling friends he wouldn’t return her calls.
Williams’ break arrived in 1992 when Teddy Riley got him a gig writing a verse of the Wreckx-N-Effect hit “Rump Shaker.” He then produced songs for performers from Kelis to Mystikal, before landing his first No. 1 with his production work on Britney Spears’ “I’m a Slave 4 U.” In 2004, Williams won two Grammy Awards for his production on Justin Timberlake’s “Justified.” Along the way he released five albums—three with N*E*R*D, one with the Neptunes and one on his own—and found time to launch two fashion lines. Now he’s preparing for the release of the Usher album, finishing the next N*E*R*D project and working with Shakira.
You’re well-known for being a tastemaker, and you have a solid understanding of branding. How did you get started thinking about that in a strategic way?
Sabina Belli from the Moet Hennessy Co., which is part of L.V.M.H., gave me an opportunity to work on the Hennessy campaign a couple years back, and I worked in creative there. I was learning on the job, and there were a couple of ideas that worked. They were very supportive, and I learned so much from that one opportunity.
How did you first connect with Cornerstone?
I met them when they put me on the cover of the Fader in 2002. They’re great guys and Cornerstone is a huge business, but Fader has stand-alone power in itself because of what they do. They’re all about discovering what is hot. Once they get on an artist, they really go all out to support them. They not only give them a cover, but they’ll try and figure out a way to get involved and work on making sure that artist breaks in the mass media.
Wasn’t Cornerstone also involved in promoting and marketing the first N*E*R*D releases?

PHARRELL TALKS ABOUT THE NEPTUNES COMEBACK

Eminem isn’t the only one on a comeback. Pharrell, one member of the hit producing and hip hop group The Neptunes, says they are plotting a comeback. “We got a lot of new treats,” Pharrell says. With fellow members Shay and Chad Hugo nodding in agreement Pharrell says “I know I’ve been out doing the rock n’ roll thing, but know that the empire strikes back.” [watch here] First, The Neptunes has the new Clipse album “Till The Casket Drops” coming out which Pharrell says he produced a “sizable amount” of the beats, including the collabo with a certain Harlem rapper. “The feature with Cam’ron is pretty serious,” said Shay, breaking his silence, with Pharrell agreeing, “Cam blacks on that.”
Pharrell went on to talk about the new N.E.R.D. album stating “If you were to ever go on the road with us, and see 80,000 people jumping at festivals, you’d know that there’s room for a hip-hop element — but those kids wanna jump,” finishing “And we’re absolutely hooked on it.” When asked about the trio’s more rock-oriented sound” he replied “It’s got more steroids in it, but hip-hop is definitely one of the shots.”
